Katharina Morik

Katharina Morik established the chair of Artificial Intelligence at the TU Dortmund University in 1991, after her habilitation at the TU Berlin University in 1988.

Together with Yves Kodratoff and other European colleagues, in 1986 she started the conference series which became ECML PKDD. She is a member of the steering board of this large European grassroots community for ML and KDD (https://ecmlpkdd.org).

In 2011, she acquired the Collaborative Research Center SFB 876 "Providing Information by Resource-Constrained Data Analysis", of which she is the spokesperson. It consists of 13 projects and a graduate school for more than 50 Ph. D. students (https://sfb876.tu-dortmund.de).

She is a spokesperson of the Competence Center for Machine Learning Rhein Ruhr (ML2R) and coordinator of the six German AI competence centers (https://www.ml2r.de).
Her interest is in machine learning for real-time, energy-efficient or even ultra-low-power systems. Applications range from the internet of things, traffic forecasting and planning, industrial production to astrophysics. Proven error and resource bounds are important for trustworthy machine learning.
