Erol is the inventor of the Random Neural Network and of its polynomial time learning algorithm. He has graduated over 90 PhDs including 24 women, and is listed in the top ten PhD supervisors worldwide by the Mathematics Genealogy Project of the American Mathematical Society. He was awarded Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur and Commandeur de l'Ordre National du Merite by the president of France for services to higher education and research.

He is currently Professor, Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences, and I3S Laboratory, University of Cote d'Azur, and Visiting Professor at Imperial College.  Previously he was Dennis Gabor Chair and Head of Intelligent Systems and Networks, Imperial College, Director of the School of EECS at University of Central Florida,  Head of the ECE Department and Nello L. Teer Professor at Duke University, Professor and Director of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Informatique, University Paris-Descartes, Professor and Co-Founder, Laboratoire de Recherche en Informatique, University Paris-Saclay, Director of the ISEM Laboratory, University Paris-Saclay, Chaired Professor  of Computer Science at University of Liege (Belgium), and Scientific Director at INRIA.
